FAQ — Port A Boat Rentals
Port A Boat Rentals

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your day on Corpus Christi Bay — from booking to boarding and beyond.

General

What is Port A Boat Rentals?

Port A Boat Rentals is a premium pontoon boat rental company based at Port Aransas Harbor on Corpus Christi Bay. We offer self-operated vessel rentals, captained sunset and dolphin tours, bonfire experiences, and a Boat Club membership program — all on brand-new Barletta tritoon pontoon boats.

We're a locally owned, family-operated business committed to delivering the best on-water experience in Port Aransas.

Where are you located?

We operate from Port Aransas Harbor in Port Aransas, Texas. You'll check in and board your vessel at our designated dock area within the harbor. Detailed directions and check-in instructions are provided at the time of booking.

What are your operating hours?

We operate year-round on a seasonal schedule based on daylight conditions. All rentals are during daylight hours only — no departures after sunset.

Summer: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Spring & Fall: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Winter: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Hours may be adjusted day-to-day based on weather conditions.

Where can we take the boat?

All rentals are restricted to Corpus Christi Bay waters only. Ocean access is not permitted under any circumstances. Our boats are equipped with GPS geofencing that monitors vessel location in real time, and you'll be briefed on all approved routes, no-go zones, and restricted areas before departure.

Popular spots include sandbar hangouts, dolphin viewing areas near Lydia Ann Lighthouse, and sheltered coves around the bay.

🚤

Our Boats

What kind of boats do you have?

Our entire fleet consists of brand-new Barletta tritoon pontoon boats — three vessels in total:

Two (2) Barletta A24QC models — 24-foot premium tritoons
One (1) Barletta A22QC Platinum — 22-foot platinum-edition tritoon

Every vessel is powered by 200+ horsepower engines, and all three are priced identically. Barletta is a premium pontoon manufacturer known for quality construction and performance. Tritoons (three pontoons instead of two) provide superior stability, increased weight capacity, and better handling in wind and current — making them ideal for bay conditions.

How many people can each boat hold?

Each vessel accommodates up to 10 guests. All pricing is per boat (not per person), so whether your group is 2 or 10, the rate stays the same. Passenger count is verified before departure and cannot exceed the vessel's approved capacity.

What's included with every rental?

Every rental includes everything you need for a great day on the water:

Brand-new Barletta Tritoon Pontoon (200+ HP)
USCG-approved life jackets for all guests
Safety equipment and first aid kit
Bluetooth stereo system
Bimini shade top
Swim ladder
Pre-departure safety & orientation briefing by trained deckhand
GPS geofencing for bay-only navigation
Fuel for standard bay cruising
Cooler space on board

Can we bring our own food, drinks, and alcohol?

Yes! We are BYOB and BYO-snacks friendly. Bring whatever food and beverages you'd like to enjoy on the water. The only rule: no glass containers of any kind. Cans, plastic, and insulated cups are all welcome.

Please note that the vessel operator may not operate the boat while under the influence of alcohol — this is both company policy and Texas state law.

Are there any mandatory fees beyond the rental rate?

Yes. A mandatory Damage Waiver is applied to every rental:

$59 for half-day rentals  |  $79 for full-day rentals  |  $49 for captained experiences

This covers minor damage up to the deductible threshold. A credit card authorization hold ($500–$1,500) is also placed on your card before departure and released after the post-return vessel inspection. A fuel surcharge may apply only if fuel usage significantly exceeds standard bay cruising.

What dates are considered Holiday Premium?

Holiday Premium pricing applies on approximately 65 days per year during high-demand periods, including:

Presidents' Day Weekend, Texas Spring Break (Mar 9–22), Easter Weekend, Texas SandFest, Memorial Day Weekend, 4th of July Week (Jun 29–Jul 5), Labor Day Weekend, Columbus Day Weekend, Thanksgiving Week, and Christmas through New Year's (Dec 19–Jan 3).

Holiday rates supersede all other seasonal tiers, and weekday discounts do not apply during these periods. Check our booking platform for the complete calendar.

Do you offer trip insurance?

Yes. Optional trip insurance is available at the time of booking: $30 for half-day and $50 for full-day rentals. This covers cancellations due to personal emergencies and other non-weather-related circumstances.

Weather-related cancellations initiated by Port A Boat Rentals always result in a full refund or free rescheduling, regardless of whether trip insurance was purchased.

Requirements & Eligibility

Who can operate the boat?

The designated Guest Operator (the person driving the boat) must meet all of the following requirements:

Be at least 25 years of age — no exceptions
Present a valid government-issued photo ID at check-in
Complete all required documentation (rental agreement, liability waiver, damage responsibility acknowledgment, and harbor rules acknowledgment)
If born on or after September 1, 1993: present a valid Texas Boater Education Certificate (or TPWD-recognized equivalent)

All eligibility checks are verified in person before boarding. No exceptions are permitted.

Do I need a boating license?

Texas doesn't have a "boating license," but the state does require a Boater Education Certificate for certain operators. Under Texas law, anyone born on or after September 1, 1993, must hold a valid Texas Boater Education Certificate to operate a vessel.

If you fall within this age range and don't yet have your certificate, you can complete the course online through the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department before your trip. Digital certificates are accepted.

Born before September 1, 1993? You are not required to have a boater education certificate under current Texas law. You still must be 25+ and meet all other eligibility requirements.

Do I need prior boating experience?

No prior boating experience is required. Every Guest Operator receives a comprehensive pre-departure safety and orientation briefing from a trained deckhand. This covers vessel operation, navigation rules, restricted areas, current conditions, and everything you need to operate the boat safely.

If you'd prefer to have a professional at the helm, you can add a USCG-licensed captain to any self-operated rental for an additional fee.

Can children come on the boat?

Absolutely! Children of all ages are welcome as passengers. Texas law requires that children under 13 years of age must wear a USCG-approved life jacket at all times while the vessel is underway. We provide life jackets in all sizes, including children's sizes.

Please note: only the designated Guest Operator (25+) may operate the vessel. Children cannot drive the boat.

🌊

Day-Of Experience

What should we expect when we arrive?

Plan to arrive early to allow time for check-in. Here's how the process works:

1. Our deckhand verifies your ID and all required documentation
2. Your deckhand assists with boarding and gets everyone seated
3. You receive a mandatory safety and orientation briefing covering vessel operation, speed zones, restricted areas, current conditions, and navigation rules
4. Once the briefing is complete and everything checks out, you're cleared for departure!

The entire process is designed to be quick and organized. Our deckhands handle all vessel staging — you never have to dock or undock the boat yourself.

What should we bring?

We recommend bringing: sunscreen, sunglasses, towels, a cooler with food and drinks (no glass!), water, hats, and a change of dry clothes. If you have little ones, bring swimsuits and water shoes.

We provide all safety equipment, life jackets, and fuel. You can also add a pre-loaded Yeti cooler with ice to your reservation if you'd rather not haul your own.

What happens when we return?

As you approach the harbor, our deckhand will be ready to receive you at the dock — you don't need to dock the boat yourself. A quick post-return inspection is conducted while you're present, including photos and documentation of the vessel's condition. You'll sign off confirming the boat's condition, and your credit card hold is released once the inspection is finalized.

Is the boat accessible for guests with mobility challenges?

Our pontoon boats cannot accommodate wheelchairs due to the vessel design and boarding process. However, guests with limited mobility who are able to board with assistance are welcome — our deckhands are trained to provide reasonable boarding assistance and will work with you to ensure safe, dignified access.

If you have questions about accessibility, please contact us before booking so we can discuss your specific needs.

🛡️

Safety & Weather

What happens if the weather is bad on our rental day?

Your safety always comes first. We — not the guest — make all final weather decisions. If sustained winds reach 20 mph or higher, or if the National Weather Service issues a Small Craft Advisory, we will cancel or reschedule your rental.

Weather-related cancellations initiated by Port A Boat Rentals always result in a full refund or free rescheduling — no penalty, no questions asked, regardless of whether you purchased trip insurance.

In moderate wind conditions (15–20 mph), we may operate with heightened caution and advise guests to stay in more sheltered areas of the bay.

Are the boats tracked and monitored?

Yes. Every vessel is equipped with GPS-based geofencing and speed-monitoring systems that track location and speed in real time. The system enforces bay-only boundaries, restricted and no-go zones (shallow flats, oyster beds, protected areas), and speed limits within designated zones.

If a boundary or speed limit is violated, both the guest and our operations team receive an immediate alert, and a staff member will contact you by phone to help you correct course.

Are life jackets provided?

Yes. Every vessel carries USCG-approved life jackets for all guests, including children's sizes. Under Texas law, children under 13 must wear a life jacket at all times while the vessel is underway (engine on and moving). Adults are encouraged to wear them as well.

Is alcohol allowed? What about the driver?

Passengers are welcome to enjoy alcoholic beverages (BYOB, no glass). However, the vessel operator may not operate the boat under the influence of alcohol or any impairing substance. This is both Texas state law and a strict condition of rental. Violations may result in immediate termination of the rental.
